Comics Arts Conference Session #2: Comics in the World
Can comic books make a difference in people's lives? How might we use them to make the world better? Jessica Motherwell McFarlane (Justice Institute of British Columbia; Life Outside the Box) describes how graphic narratives can help people practice moving from bystanders to upstanders to stop social injustices and bullying. Megan Hoelting (Northwest Missouri State University) uses Lumberjanes to explore youth agency, analyzing comics for survival stories, mythology adaptations, and LGBTQ accounts of 'coming out.' Victoria Minnich recorded her daily observations as the only woman among male deckhands, through the visual language of comics. Rachel Branham (Marblehead High School; What's So Great About Art, Anyway? A Teacher's Odyssey) applies visual narrative in public education for 21st-century skills.

Friday Comic Pitch Review
If you’re a writer or artist attending the Comic Creator Connection, this is your chance to practice giving your pitch before the networking event and get some free coaching from a pro. A pitch is usually a brief speech designed to persuade and interest your listener in what you’re doing or what you’ve made. Giving a good pitch is a vital skill you must have to bring your project to life. Fortunately, it’s also a skill you can learn and improve with practice. Pitch reviews will be conducted by Douglas Neff, an experienced presentation coach and professional public speaker who also hosts the Comic Creator Connection. This is not a panel. Instead, these are 3- to 5-minute individual coaching sessions for as many people as can be accommodated in the scheduled time. Spaces are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Comic Book Law School - So I Have This Idea...
With the backbone of the economy swinging more and more toward the production and distribution of creative works, and with an ever-increasing number of channels through which to offer or sell your creative works, it has never been easier to get your creations in front of a willing and ready audience (hopefully in a profitable way). But with a legal system that sometime struggles to keep up with the newest technological advances, there are also more pitfalls than ever to navigate your way through on the road to success. And while it may be true that the greater the risk the greater the potential reward, it is foolhardy to risk losing your creations when a few simple steps may provide you with strong basic protections against the pirates lurking around each technological corner ready to fleece the unwary. Bottom line: Before you accidentally give away your next big idea, it may be time to get some help. Luckily, noted IP attorney Michael Lovitz, author of The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, is on hand to discuss the truths and myths of protecting your intellectual capital. Attendees are invited to join an interactive discussion about basic rights provided under U.S. Copyright and Trademark laws, starting with the basics on the ownership and protection of ideas, a brief overview of copyright and trademark rights, including for works of authorship, characters, and names, as well as the registration process for each, and (time permitting) a brief discussion on why written agreement are good, and not all lawyers bring bad news. Please Note: The Comic Book Law School® seminars are designed to provide relevant information and practice tips to practicing attorneys, as well as practical tips to creators and other professionals who may wish to attend. However, the seminar is presented for information and entertainment purposes only, and the information presented and opinions expressed at the seminars do not constitute legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. Queer Comics at the Crossroads
UPDATED: Tue, Mar 13, 08:44PM
In the past several years, LGBTQAIU individuals have made great strides in representation in comics. What are the unique challenges facing writers and artists who wish to examine intersectionality of identities? How do a character's additional identities complement or complicate their lives and loves? Moderator Viktor Kerney (#GayMediaSoWhite creator, Prism Comics board member) and panelists Sean Z. Maker (Bent-Con, Ramonah Rising), Ajuan Mance (Gender Studies), William O. Tyler (Queerbait), Sonya Saturday (Sonya Saturday's Comics and Art) discuss creating characters and stories that highlight diversity and inclusion.

Are you a writer with a great idea for a comic book series, but you can’t draw? Or maybe you’re an artist looking to illustrate an incredible story, but you can’t write. WonderCon is proud to once again host the Comic Creator Connection, a fast-paced networking event that puts writers and artists together to help them meet new creative partners. Here’s how it works: In a 2-hour period writers and artists will sit down across from each other at a table. (And by artists, we mean pencillers, inkers, colorists, etc—all are welcome!) Then, in 5-minute sessions, you will talk one-on-one with each other about your ideas and skills. At the end of each 5-minute period, you will get up and move on to the next person. If you’re interested in furthering the conversation, you’ll exchange contact information. Think of it as speed-dating, but for writers and artists! Sign-ups are taken in advance for this event, but space may still be available on site.

The villains take over the forms of the feudal lords that rule the divided land, with the Joker taking the lead among the warring factions. As his traditional high-tech weaponry is exhausted almost immediately, Batman must rely on his intellect and his allies – including Catwoman and the extended Bat-family – to restore order to the land, and return to present-day Gotham City. The visually stunning Batman Ninja will be discussed afterward by the creative team of director Jumpei Mizusaki (Opening animation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), original screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann), and character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) and English-language screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supah Ninjas, Afro Samurai) alongside several of the film’s actors, including the voice of Batman, Roger Craig Smith (Batman: Arkham Origins), Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development) as the Joker, Fred Tatasciore (Family Guy) as Gorilla Grodd & Deathstroke, Yuri Lowenthal (Ben 10: Omniverse) as Robin & Red Hood, Adam Croasdell (Reign) as Nightwing & Alfred, Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Penguin and Eric Bauza (The Adventures of Puss in Boots) as Two-Face. Whitney Moore (DC All-Access) will moderate. Warner Bros. Japan, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment bring Batman Ninja to Digital starting April 24, 2018, and Blu-ray Steelbook, Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on May 8, 2018

The Squid Girl
The Squid Girl—Angered by mankind's pollution of her beloved ocean, Squid Girl rises from its depths to punish humanity. Unfortunately, her small stature doesn’t intimidate humans, and instead of unleashing a tsunami of destruction, she only inflicts some minor damage to a pleasant little beachside restaurant called Lemon Beach House. As punishment, the unexpectedly aggressive Aizawa sisters who run the restaurant force her to work as a waitress to pay off the damages, and they even make her supply them with her own squid ink for a tasty squid ink flavored spaghetti.

Spotlight on Matthew Rosenberg
Comics writer Matthew Rosenberg quickly made a name for himself with indie hits We Can Never Go Home and 4 Kids Walk into a Bank. Now with titles such as Phoenix Resurrection, The Punisher, New Mutants, Rocket Raccoon, Secret Warriors, and Kingpin to his name, Matthew is emerging as one of the new faces of Marvel Comics. He doesn't really have anything planned, so come listen to him nervously ramble, yell out questions at him, or just eat your lunch at what may be the most awkward program of the weekend. He'll probably bring some free comics to give out, so get there early.

Nicholas Diak (The New Peplum: Essays on Sword and Sandal Films and Television Programs Since the 1990s) employs concepts such as gender representation and the hero's journey to explore how Dynamite Comics's Re-Animater series reimagines and subverts H. P. Lovecraft's "Herbert West–Reanimator."

Comics Arts Conference Session #5: Borders and Liminal Spaces
Andrew Barton (Texas State University) examines how Dr. Strange's straddling of the borders between magic and medicine in Dr. Strange: The Oath can enhance our understanding of the interplay between the scientific and the fantastic. Lillian Martinez (Texas State University) details how Saga's star-crossed love story reveals the potentialities unleashed when sexual acts transgress the binaries and borders of war. Sean Rachel Mardell (Texas State University) argues that Frank Castle's arc in The Punisher (2014–2015 series) and his inevitable inability to escape his "punishing'" nature connects with the inherent link between whiteness and the imperialistic past and present. Michael Gonzales (Texas State University) uses DC: The New Frontier as a case study to examine how the "Freak Lab Accident" trope in origin stories is a liminal event between humanity and superhumanity, heroism and villainy.

Comics Arts Conference Session #6: Comics and Women
This panel presents four approaches to considering the representations of women in comics. Resisting the subsuming of female heroes under masculine identities, Megan Vinson (Indiana University Bloomington) examines what happens in Greek drama, comics, and contemporary superhero films when the mother-figure is embraced, rather than rejected, in constructing heroic forms. Olivia Hicks (University of Dundee) looks at how British superheroine Valda from the anthology Mandy showcases the fascinating and complex process of repurposing characters within a gendered context, and asks how Mandy adapts and reconstructs genre and gender in the British superhero sports story. Sean O'Brien (Wayne State University) studies Geek Feminism as a subculture with critical components in the production of comics, the consumption of comics, and as subject matter. Monica Geraffo (Fashion Institute of Technology) unpacks Storm’s makeover in The Uncanny X-Men #173 from cape to punk streetwear, a fan-favorite depiction that would become both synonymous with her character and a visual representation of a society in transition.

Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakumoto
Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto—In classroom 1-2 is Sakamoto, the coolest guy in school and possibly ever. He makes his glasses and school uniform look fashionable, and nothing ever seems to surprise or rattle him. All the girls are crazy for him, and even the most macho delinquents feel a little different whenever he’s around. Sakamoto never seems to notice it or take advantage of this attention, and without even trying he’s mysterious and cool. Some people are irritated by this, but the more someone challenges Sakamoto, the more they appear to fall under the spell of his coolness.

Celebrate Ultraverse 25th Anniversary
In June 1993, Malibu Comics launched a new universe of characters unlike anything fans had ever seen. The Ultraverse brought writers, editors, and artists together to create a well-conceived world before the first title was released. The Ultraverse burned exciting and bright. There was a live-action short, a TV series, action figures, and an animated series—and then suddenly it was all gone. Titles like Prime, Freex, Mantra, Sludge, Firearm, Nightman, Ultraforce, and Rune still boast a large fan following. Join panelists Chris Ulm (Ultra editor-in-chief), Ross Richie (BOOM! publisher/Ultra marketing), Terry Dodson (Mantra artist), Aaron Lopresti (Sludge co-writer/artist), and moderator Dave Olbrich (Ultra publisher) to celebrate the Ultraverse.
